Former WWE Superstar Matt Riddle recently sat down for an interview with the New York Post, discussing his evolution away from the “goof” persona he portrayed in WWE and his current success in promotions like MLW, NJPW, AAA, and the independent circuit.
Riddle emphasized that he now has more control over his character, moving away from the forgetful and “childish” image seen in WWE. He wants to be taken more seriously, highlighting his background in combat sports from the UFC and jujitsu.
In MLW, Riddle feels he is in a favorable position and appreciates the company’s professionalism. He praised the combat-sports-focused approach of the promotion, calling it a “breath of fresh air” in the wrestling industry.
While Riddle acknowledged that he was set to earn a million dollars in WWE, his release last September followed personal struggles, including substance abuse issues and strained family relationships. The demanding schedule and travel commitments led to the deterioration of his family life, resulting in a divorce from his first wife.
Despite the challenges he faced in WWE, Riddle expressed relief over his release, indicating that he is now in a better place personally. He attributed his improved well-being to the opportunity to focus on himself and the impending arrival of his new baby.
Although Riddle mentioned that a return to WWE is not out of the question, his current priorities lie with his fiancée and his newborn son. He highlighted a desire to repair his relationship with Roman Reigns, following past controversies and misunderstandings between them.
Riddle’s journey includes a recent interview with Muscle Man Malcolm, where he discussed Randy Orton’s proposal for a potential return to WWE. Reflecting on past tensions with Reigns, Riddle expressed a desire for reconciliation, having moved past the issues that initially strained their interactions.
Looking ahead, Riddle is scheduled to face Matt Justice at MLW’s Summer of the Beast event in Queens, New York. The event will be available for viewing on MLW’s YouTube channel, offering fans an exciting showdown between two talented competitors.
